5 Great Sustainable Halloween Ideas

Are you looking forward to Halloween? Looking for ways you can make it greener? Then take some inspiration from the following 5 tips on making your halloween plans more sustainable. Because single use and waste are very scary things!!!!

Thrift your costume:

I am sure most of you reading this are thinking about “what I can wear this halloween?” If you’re unable to get creative in your wardrobe, try thrifting for some inspiration to create a wonderful costume. I am sure you have several charity shops near you! Go check them out and see if you can make a costume out of the gems you can find.

Swap costumes with friends:

If you’re not able to thrift any items to make a costume, try doing some swaps with friends, maybe you can share costumes if they have any! Not only will this be a great activity to do with people important to you, but by engaging with people in this way, it helps socialise the normality of reusing and having a more circular environment and society. We need to start pushing the new normal of looking after what we have and helping continue the lifetime of our products.

Purchase organic or locally sourced candy:

No halloween is complete without candy/sweets… Fact! So why not look at getting some great organic, ideally locally sourced sweets for your Trick or Treaters? They’ll all be amazed at this great treat you’ll give them and you’ll avoid any scary issues. They’re also more likely to be in biodegradable/compostable packaging - you’ll need something to feed the zombies when they’re in the ground!

Throw a green Halloween party:

If you or your friends are planning a Halloween party, why not make it more green???

Focus on the decorations; try not to buy anything that will be single use and made from plastic. Instead, make some great decorations out of waste! You can make a scarecrow out of some old clothing for instance. Then wash and reuse it. Also choose locally sourced food for your guests; maybe make some things out of the carved pumpkin you did!

Use a local pumpkin patch rather than a supermarket:

A quick google search nearby should provide some pumpkin patches where you can buy, or pick your own pumpkins, this turns getting something last minute from the supermarket, into a great day out with friends or your family. Plus a pumpkin patch has become a must for the autumn/fall photo opportunities. Following this check my previous post of great uses for pumpkins this autumn.
