5 Apps to help you reduce your footprint

Have you ever thought there must be some great tools on smart phones which can assist you with living a more sustainable life?

Well here are 5 apps you can use from today to give you that small boost!

TreeApp

TreeApp is a great way to offset your carbon footprint. How it works: you are able to plant one tree every day in exchange for watching and interacting with an advert. These adverts fund the planting of the trees.

At first I was a bit unsure if I would want to do this. However, the adverts are for the most environmentally conscious companies, which has provided great inspiration for gifts in the past.

You’re able to plant trees in a whole host of countries & locations where there are already some incredible projects for environmental protection, rewinding and reforesting.

The app provides images as evidence of the planting of the trees you’ve sponsored. I know this is not the same as physically going to see them be put in the ground. I am a person of trust and I would like to believe these have been planted in the 6 months after we have pledged them.

I have used this app for nearly a year now and have planted over 200+ trees in that time. I know it is an app I enjoy when I get annoyed if I forget to plant that day!

5/5 would recommend

Treekly

Treekly is similar to TreeApp, but it is based on your daily steps. The idea is that if you walk more than 5000 steps 5 days a week then you’ll be able to plant a tree with them.

When you unlock the option to plant it informs you of who’s sponsored the planting, this is normally an environmentally conscious company similar to TreeApp.

There is a free version of this app which allows you to plant one tree a week, or you can subscribe to the app in order to have a tree planted daily! I am still using the free one based on my other planting activity, not to say it hasn’t inticed me to sponsor some more when we go on holiday or travel.

Another great app, it is a bit clunky compared to TreeApp, but it is largely passive and takes your step input from the health app on your phone.

The Vegan Kind

I love this app for finding some great alternative options for food! It’s essentially a vegan supermarket full of incredible products to enjoy guilt free!

Not only for vegans but for all who want to explore the world of alternative food!

I’ve really enjoyed using it, not only buying through the app itself, but also when I’m shopping I can know what to look for as I’ve researched a little here first 😜.

Planet Patrol

Now this app, I think is a must for everyone! If you’ve ever seen litter on the floor and picked it up, then use this app to log it!

Not only does it encourage you to litterpick more, but they host pick-up events globally, getting people involved in wonderful communities, usually based around an activity… there are a lot of SUP’s.

Better than all that, the data from the app goes into an annual report, so get a pic, pick it up, and put it into recycling 😍.

Deedster

We have used this whilst in work for a sustainable challenge over several weeks. It is an app which gives you deeds to complete based on being sustainable. If you’re looking for inspiration for methods to reduce your personal footprint, this app is ideal for you.

The interface was really fun to use, and the competitive side of it encouraged you to complete deeds regularly and cement them into your routing.

As we used it over several weeks it was a great opportunity to develop a lot of habits to carry on after the work challenge was complete.

There are many more apps also which can help you and I will likely follow this up in the future. These though are 5 I use regularly at the moment and offer me some great help in reducing my carbon footprint.
