Low Carbon Travel from Gothenburg

So you love travelling, but want to reduce the impact you have whilst doing so.

This is the post for you, here I outline some interesting destinations I can get to from Gothenburg and I’m working my way around doing so whilst avoiding the aviation industry.

Using slow travel like busses and trains to explore without the huge CO2 cost… plus you also get the time to enjoy the journey and take liquids on board😍.

Bus/ Coach:

Usually the cheapest option for travelling, you’re able to get to a lot of cities around Sweden and the Nordic region via bus/coach. I am actually writing this post on a 3hr50min bus from Gothenburg to Oslo.

Not only Olso, but Copenhagen, Stockholm, and some amazing smaller towns a cities in region are accessible via bus.

Comparing this transport to what I’m used to in the Uk is that the service is significantly better, the costs compared to National express are cheaper, and the quality of the vehicles feel higher. Not to mention the views of the Nordic coastline! 😍😍

For Friday to Sunday trip it will cost less than £100 to have two people and luggage

Train:

Now train travel is actually my personal favourite, you get the benefit of low carbon relative travel, which the ability to roam freely around. As a tall man this is very important 😂.

Now trips I’ve had so far by train like last weeks adventure in Copenhagen, have been amazingly simple.

The cost of the train is a bit more expensive compared to the bus, but when you have to travel to the like of Stockholm it can be significantly faster. Still around £100 return per person rather than together on the bus. I am planning a trip in a couple of weeks to Stockholm, which is fun.

One thing that really confused and upset me a little was that Ryan air offered tickets for £30. How can people make the sustainable choice when the cost of a plane is 30% of that of the train?

There are some other amazing places to visit by train from Gothenburg and not just in the nordics.

Ferry:

Since moving or planning my move to Sweden I’ve dreamt of a ferry trip around the Baltic Sea, hitting several countries and coastal cities…

Which I will be doing next year!

From Stockholm you can take the ferry to so many places, and hopefully they can all be reached between each other.

Here are a list of a couple of places I want to try and visit next year using the ferry:

  • Helsinki, Finland

  • Tallinn, Estonia

  • Riga, Latvia

  • Klaipeda, Lithuania

  • Gdansk, Poland

  • St Petersburg, Russia (pre war wish) i want to highlight it is somewhere I would love to visit, when we’re in a state of peace.

Let me know how you like to travel? What are your low wast and sustainable travel tips?
