Rating vegan chocolate - Sweden edition

For October, I decided with my girlfriend to go as vegan as we could (taking dinner at friends’ houses and unavoidable situations into account). This has been pretty straight forward and almost a direct copy across from doing mainly vegan in U.K.

Except when it comes to chocolate. Sweden doesn’t have the same chocolate as the U.K. They have their own version of Cadbury dairy milk - the brand is called marabou, which is kind of like milka - but that brand doesn’t have a vegan version. Dark chocolate isn’t so popular here and the ones they have all have milk fat. No galaxy vegan either.

So we had to search a little further afield to find Sweden’s supply of vegan chocolate bars. Here’s what we have tried so far:

100% lovely vegan:

⭐️⭐️⭐️ for 100% lovely vegan. It was pretty good, helped by the texture from the nuts but a little lacking in chocolate taste and had that creaminess missing. But not bad at all.

Also got this in Lidl so easily accessible and not too expensive, about £2.40

ichoc - White Vanilla

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 for this white chocolate. Mainly because it was spenny - we got it in an organic independent shop and it was about £3.50. So you could say we walked right into that one 😅 but it was creamy, had a nice strong vanilla coming through and wasn’t oily. Also big plus that the whole packaging was plastic free! It’s not quite got the decadence of Green and Blacks or the nostalgia of Milky bar, but hits the craving spot if you’re missing the pure sugar of white chocolate (let’s face it there’s no cocoa left by the time it’s white choc).

Lindt Vegan Oat - Cookie

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We got it in the Coop and it was pretty spenny - about £3.30 for this teeny bar BUT it was really delicious and the closest to the creamy taste of cow’s milk choc and had the satisfying crunch from the cookie pieces. The first bite you notice the oat base; it reminded me of the first time you have oat milk in your coffee. The more you have it, the more you get used to the oat and realise how creamy and delicious it is. This definitely was the best for replacing the gap of dairy chocolate.

Notable mentions of other vegan treats…

Iceream brand 3 Vänner. So far we’ve tried White Choc & Raspberry and Pistachio & Pistachio. This ice cream is 100% vegan and really really good. So creamy. The pistachio one is missing a little something so we added melted chocolate on top to elevate it but the white choc & raspberry hit different; we ate it straight from the tub. These were in both Coop and Lidl, so readily available in big supermarkets BUT be aware it is not a cheap day out soft serve by the sea kind of ice cream. It’s on a par with Oatly, Ben & Jerry’s and Waitrose no 1 - about £4.50 for a tub! 🫠
